Portable GE Air conditioner wont turn on after storing for the winter? I have a portable GE air conditioner for our living room. When bringing it out this summer from storing it all winter in the closet the unit will not power on. I have checked the circut, and it works with our window A/C unit. I'm thinking it could be a fuse but i dont see one. Any help would be appreciated jim replied: "the motor could be bad. there should also be a capacitor on the motor which helps it start- its a oval silver item about the size of a pack of cigarettes or smaller with two wires attached to it. that could be bad also. you can get it tested at an electrical supply house like grainger." need GE Air Conditioner 220 volts Model # AJM10DFV4? This item is a heat pump. Both hot and cold restoration replied: "Craig's list in Rhode Island ... guy wants $75 for it.
Most A/C's have a heater function by reversing the hot and cold direction built in with the A/C. This is called "Heat pump." These units only work when it is over 30 degrees outside. Otherwise, you can only heat the air from outside about 30 degrees. This does not work in a cold winter in most places.
What you probably want is a PTAC unit. It has heating coils and a freon cooling unit.
Anyways, new units of both can be found through hdsupply.com (the commercial unit of Home Depot.) They supply parts and replacement units for less than anyone else and also guarantee the workings of each unit with a 48 hour repair or replace guarantee IN-YOUR-HOUSE. They pay for all service calls for the first year. After that, generally a unit will work forever if it is maintained." GE Air conditioner holding water.? My two yr old wall unit A/C is holding water in the bottom, and spraying it out of the top grate along with the air. It is also makinga horrible grinding/scraping noise.
There is no drain in the unit, and it says not to drill a hole in the bottom to drain the water.
What do I do? eejonesaux replied: "HI,,, see if you can wedge something to raise up the front and let the water pour out the back outside.... that will stop it...... or,, darn it just drill a hole in the back side of it.....
good luck"
dak0tawayne replied: "It is probably just dirty and needs a good cleaning. Pull it out of the wall and take it outside and dissasemble it. Then get the garden hose and wash it all out. Keep rinsing until all of the dirt is gone. Let it dry and put it back and plug it in."
leatherdragon69 replied: "Make sure your AC is angled down, outside the window. Have you checked on line with GE? Is it still under warranty? The water needs to drain from somewhere so it doesn't blow out your compressor. check for a pan in the bottom. try GE.com they have product troubleshooting. Good Luck!"
acguyarizona replied: "first check to see if the coil is dirty and then check to see if the unit is level. also in the back of the unit their is sometimes a drain make sure the drain is clear...if the coil is dirty then clean it with a lite brush or coil comb...."
Jason F replied: "I had the same problem and no matter how far I tilted the thing it wouldn't drain. I pulled the front off and found water accumulating in the styrofoam shroud around the blower.
When enough built up the blower would start spraying it out the top
My solution was to remove the back and poke a hole through the styrofoam where the water was building up. Now with a little tilt the water drains through that hole into the pan. Worked like a champ for me.
Good Luck!" I have a very old GE air conditioner. 15000 BTU 14 amps? Model AQP12AAM1.
Here's the thing. Its not putting out the best air. It's cooling a space approx 35'x20'. Output is strong, filter is clean, its just real old and low on gas.
Question: What size can I go down to where I can cool the room size comfortably and knock out a few amps. 14 amps has got to be costing me a lot in electricity right? BBQGuide replied: "When you talk amperage like 14, that would be the maximum it would draw on high blower with the compressor running. The less efficient your old unit becomes the more it has to run at maximum draw to get the temperature where it needs to be hence costing more to run.
Air conditioners have come a long way in efficiency since your model was made. You will save money right off the bat by replacing it with the same BTU unit of a new style.
Not knowing what's in your room, if it's enclosed and what other variable on the load would be to actually calculate the BTU needed we should go by what you have used when it was running good.
Shop for a new unit AROUND the 15,000 BTU that has a good ENERGY STAR RATING and you will be saving money in no time." Should I replace or repair in-wall air conditioner? Our rental property has an old GE Air Conditioner mounted in the wall. It does not work. We have a technical sheet with all part information on it for the AC. Is it cheaper to replace the entire unit, or get it repaired? slick1321 replied: "If it is old i.e. over ten years just replace it because the new ones are way more efficient. My dad just bought an in-wall unit, 15,000 BTU's for $350 which is a steal. Shop around and you can find some pretty good prices and a new unit will save you money in the long term"
neville s replied: "i would say buy a new but make sure it is one that you can move with it, it don't make sense you spend a lot of money and somehow you have to leave you can't take the AC unit with you"
Tom replied: "It might cost $50 or less to fix. Find out first."
Ronald P replied: "The key word here is old meaning it a very low EER rating. A new one will run on 1/2 the amps the old ones used. Replace it and save money.
Good Luck"
Thor replied: "One thing to consider is that a thru wall unit replacement may not be exactly the same size for the case and you might need to replace the case in the wall. That adds to the cost.
Plus there is a charge for disposal.
Since the wall a/c units normally will pull out of the case, after removing the faceplate, you can pull it out and take it to a shop for an estimate and/or a repair. They aren't light though.
Shop rates are cheaper than service in the home. And if you decide to refuse the estimate and get a new one they can handle the disposal, sometimes for free.
You have to weigh the repair against the age and condition.
You didn't say much other than it doesn't work. Be sure you did the simple thing and make sure there is power there for it because it might be, should be, on it's own circuit.
Good Luck." |
